Tom Watson – JLR Apprenticeship Scheme – Rybrook Jaguar Warrington
Posted in News | 21/06/2019
We asked our recently Level 2 Qualified Jaguar Apprentice graduate - Tom Watson about the programme, his day to day role and about his future Goals!
Tell us a bit about yourself…..
My name is Tom Watson, I am 20 years old, from Runcorn. I am a chatty, confident and outgoing person….most say I am easy to talk to! I have a passion for football and coach under 6’s/7’s in my spare time, alongside plenty of mountain walks and bike rides.
Describe a typical day at work:
A typical day in work starts with an all-important cup of tea, we can all agree no work starts until I’ve had that first sip! I then setup my workstation for the day, ensuring I have everything I need for the day’s tasks ahead. Each day can vary regarding the workload and the type of work. A busy day consists of 2-3 services, PDA’s, fitting number plates and tidying up after everyone! I try and help anyone out who needs a hand as and when and work closely with other experienced technicians whose vast knowledge is invaluable.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Wire/electrical faults tend to offer a challenge, but this is something I like about the job….all about getting stuck in and solving the problem. The team are always on hand to support me and Gary – my mentor for the apprenticeship program, is always available to offer advice as and when I need it.
What made you interested in working as technician and in particular for Rybrook Jaguar.
The role itself required me to be hands on, solve problems on a day to day basis and work to JLR’s high standards. This is what initially interested me, also hearing only positive words about Rybrook as company. Being privately owned, I knew the dealership would have a close team and the work ethic would help me to progress through my apprenticeship scheme.
Tell us about the Apprentice program with Rybrook
The Apprenticeship program gave me plenty of opportunities to learn all job roles within the business, i.e. shadowing service in my first couple of weeks to gain a better understanding the processes. Rybrook were extremely accommodating throughout the programme, offering hands on experience as well as learning a wealth of information from both experienced and new technicians.
Three and a half years in… how are you getting on?
Well I am a fully qualified Technician! So that’s good I suppose. I have learnt a lot over the duration of my apprenticeship, now a confident level 2 technician with an understanding of electrics and general vehicle maintenance.
I would like to personally thank my mentor throughout the apprenticeship programme who provided plenty of support, offered guidance where I needed it and generally just kept me going throughout the whole programme. His 20+ years of Jaguar Experience all partaken at Rybrook helped to push me further along, gaining more confidence in my own ability. The whole team of technicians were also fantastic throughout and continue to push me towards the next step….. Level 3!
What do you love most about working at Rybrook Jaguar?
The team that was have at Rybrook is a close-knit group and it’s not just the service side of the business! Everyone gets on really well it really shows with how successful Rybrook Jaguar Warrington is. Most of all the team of technicians are a great laugh and spur me on to progress to the next stage of my career (Level 3).
Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
To develop my skillset and to hopefully obtain my Level 4 Technician further down the line! Management would be something I would like to explore at a later date, but most importantly to develop as a technician, with Rybrook Jaguar!
